This approach was inspired by a cat painting by Jamie Wyeth. Mr. Wyeth's painting is probably quite large, and features lots of green apples. Mine is 11 x 14"

Mother and Child - Mary Cassatt

January 19, the Ohio Plein Air Society invited artists to paint at the Cincinnati Art Museum. I brought an 11 x 14" panel to copy one of my favorites. Next time, I'll try Elizabeth Nourse.
I'm preparing to conduct a workshop at the Cincinnati Art Club March 1 & 2. The subject will be 'painting from photos.' Students will bring their own photos, and we'll work on composition, color, mood and creating distance. It should be a blast.

Sharon Woods Show

"The Kids Are Gone"
The last scheduled show of 2007 opens in Cincinnati Sunday, October 21 with a reception from 1-4 p.m. The show is a 5 artist exhibit hosted at the Sharon Center at Sharon Woods. Don't put off your visit - the show only runs through October 28.

The goldfish have plenty of hiding places this summer.
You won't see a lot of postings this summer, as I get ready for several shows that are coming up this fall. 8 x 10" panels have become my favorite painting surface for outdoor excursions. This excursion just took me to the front yard...Stay tuned!

Uncommon Ground

This little house outside Loveland, Ohio, is part of a retreat center. The undeveloped valley vista beyond the house is becoming a rare scene in Southeast Ohio. It seems that everything is for sale in 'God's Country.'
We had a great day on Main Street yesterday. Second Sundays on Main in downtown Cincinnati has really become a big event. We had a grilled mett from the street vendor, an iced coffee from Kaldi's and sold 4 paintings. I even got a good start on a new painting.

This scene really may be gone tomorrow. The barn and surrounding buildings are due for demolition this month.

Phoenix Foundry

The BIG PROJECT is finally complete, so I thought you might like to see the results. These two paintings have been a lesson in gathering and piecing together reference, then trying to resolve issues like scale and lighting.

Work and More Work

I now have two paintings in progress. They are 36 x 24"
oils on canvas, commissioned by the John P. Parker Museum in Ripley,
Ohio.

I am especially excited about the exposure this work will
receive when it travels with an exhibit in Cincinnati's Freedom Center,
and later at Music Hall for the opening of an opera.

Honestly,
I do miss the daily painting routine. There is a rewarding sense of
accomplishment in FINISHING so many paintings. I have 80 paintings in
my inventory list of work that was completed and posted on this blog
(andEbay ) since September 2, when I began this journey.

Coming
this summer and fall are FOUR BIG SHOWS in the Cincinnati area. I'm
sure the shows will include some works as small as 8 x 10" but most
will be bigger. It is my goal to have at least one large feature
painting for each show. Considering how long it is taking to do the two
paintings I posted today, I'm going to need a lot of painting time.

I met a busy family having lunch at the famous Beehive in Augusta, Kentucky. It was a blustery day, but not everyone seemed to notice.

Lily is one of three commissions I completed recently. One of the keys to a successful painting is good subject matter. The photos I was sent made great paintings.

Spring Grove

This was started plein air last spring and finished in the studio. We finally have some pretty snow in Cincinnati, but I hope the groundhog is right this year.
