Phoenix Foundry

The BIG PROJECT is finally complete, so I thought you might like to see the results. These two paintings have been a lesson in gathering and piecing together reference, then trying to resolve issues like scale and lighting.

Work and More Work

I now have two paintings in progress. They are 36 x 24"
oils on canvas, commissioned by the John P. Parker Museum in Ripley,
Ohio.

I am especially excited about the exposure this work will
receive when it travels with an exhibit in Cincinnati's Freedom Center,
and later at Music Hall for the opening of an opera.

Honestly,
I do miss the daily painting routine. There is a rewarding sense of
accomplishment in FINISHING so many paintings. I have 80 paintings in
my inventory list of work that was completed and posted on this blog
(andEbay ) since September 2, when I began this journey.

Coming
this summer and fall are FOUR BIG SHOWS in the Cincinnati area. I'm
sure the shows will include some works as small as 8 x 10" but most
will be bigger. It is my goal to have at least one large feature
painting for each show. Considering how long it is taking to do the two
paintings I posted today, I'm going to need a lot of painting time.
Stay tuned!

Favorite Aunt

10 x 8" oil on panel.
I met a busy family having lunch at the famous Beehive in Augusta, Kentucky. It was a blustery day, but not everyone seemed to notice.

I know this is the first blog I've managed to get to this week...and it feels good! Have a great weekend.

Michael

10 x 8" oil on panel. Isn't he a cutie? This is the third of a trio of portraits done for a VERY GOOD customer in New York.

Enjoy!

Grace

Hooray! Thanks to my blog guru, Karen, for walking me through this AGAIN. It turns out I have to turn off my pop-up blocker to upload a photo.

So, enjoy the painting. This was a commission last month.

Go Granny!

9 1/2 x 7 1/2" pastel.

Sorry! I'm having trouble getting Blogger to upload my picture! If you ever get to see it, it's an up-close and personal study in light and texture. I think the link will work with Ebay.

Lily

8 x 10" oil on panel.

Lily is one of three commissions I completed recently. One of the keys to a successful painting is good subject matter. The photos I was sent made great paintings.

Spring Grove

9 x 12" oil on panel.

This was started plein air last spring and finished in the studio. We finally have some pretty snow in Cincinnati, but I hope the groundhog is right this year.

I'll be back online more regularly starting next week. Projects are getting under control - for now. If you'd like to subscribe to my Daily Painting E-mail, click the white box to the right.

Elements

5 x 7" oil on panel.

I love to set up complementary colors. Cobalt glass next to an orange is like candy for the eye.

Convince Me

7 x 5" oil on panel.

Whatever he was saying, I don't think she was buying it. I painted this from a photo I took in Italy. People watching is a good sport in any country.

Last Catch of the Day

5 x 7" oil on panel.

I guess I'm on a seafood kick...What seems really appealing right now is a warm breeze. We finally got a little snow in Cincinnati, and I'm already pining for a trip South!

I painted this scene because watching a skilled fish cleaner always reminds me of Grandpa.

Lobster & Labatts

5 x 7" oil on panel.

M-m-m. The lobster in Maine is so good, you almost don't notice the fresh salt air. In the background, you can see my friend, Mary, is about to say, "I'll have what she's having."

Cozy Tea

8 x 8" oil on panel.

I set up this still life for my Thursday class. It looked so good, I had to paint it myself! I really had to move fast, because the petals were dropping rapidly.

Hale's "Agnes"

10 x 8" oil on panel.

This is being posted a bit late. Blogspot's server was having problems the other day. Anyway, this painting is a copy of Philip Leslie Hale's "Agnes". I joined a group of plein air painters at the Cincinnati Art Museum Saturday, and painted this cropped and reduced copy of the painting he did in 1915.

The Guardian

5 x 7" oil on panel.

"De ja view" continues with an early painting that received a lot of good comments previously.

The guards at New York art museums have seen just about everything. This one cut a striking figure in a temporary passageway in the Guggenheim.
